The Farms, a tight 1.95-mile Illinois classic where car control beats horsepower
- 1.95 mi
- 7 turns
- Opened 1967
- South Beloit, Illinois
Blackhawk Farms Raceway opened in 1967 on a 219-acre farm just west of South Beloit, Illinois, a decade after nearby Road America and within easy reach of both Chicago and Milwaukee. Jerry Dunbar designed the original layout; Tito and Marcia Nappi built and operated the track for nearly two decades before passing it to new ownership.
The circuit is only 1.95 miles with seven turns, but it packs a lot into a small footprint. The lap is technical and flowing, with a family atmosphere that has made "The Farms" a staple of Midwest club racing for nearly 60 years. A chicane was added in 1992 after Turn 3 to slow cars before a tight section with limited runoff.
Today Blackhawk hosts SCCA, Midwestern Council, VSCDA, SVRA, and HPDE events. Paul Musschoot has owned the facility since 2007, with ongoing improvements to paddock, tech, and drainage. Drivers from Paul Newman to Stirling Moss have turned laps here, it rewards precision over outright speed.
Notable features
- Seven-turn intensity: A short lap with little rest, every corner matters and momentum is easy to lose.
- 1992 chicane: Added between Turns 3 and 4 to improve safety before a tight section with limited runoff.
- Illinois–Wisconsin border: Minutes from Interstate 90, roughly 90 miles from Chicago and Milwaukee.
- Road America neighbor: Often run in the same track-day calendar as Elkhart Lake, a very different lap in a very different package.
- Club-racing heritage: A longtime SCCA and vintage-racing venue with an open, spectator-friendly paddock and a loyal Midwest following.
